About Rhayader intro

Situated at a natural crossroads between east and west, north and south, Rhayader has for centuries offered a welcome for travellers: from the Romans who had a stopover camp in the Elan Valley, Monks journeying between the Abbeys of Strata Florida and Abbeycwmhir and Drovers taking their livestock to far off markets and returning with goods and news.

Today history merges with the present. While agriculture remains a very important element of life here, vividly portrayed in the weekly Livestock Markets, the ancient and stunning landscape, rich in rare and beautiful wildlife, provides a wealth of opportunities for the modern activities of birdwatching, walking and mountain biking.

Business Directory intro

This aims to become a comprehensive directory of every shop, trade or business in Rhayader and District – so if your business isn’t here you might be missing out!

Community intro

The social history of Rhayader and district is rooted in traditional hill farming and influenced by the tremendous impact of the building of the Elan Valley Dams at the turn of the last century. This tough existence in beautiful, though sometimes harsh conditions has developed a very strong community spirit and pride of place combined with open-hearted willingness to welcome visitors.

Rhayader today, with a population of just over 2000 has a surprising number and variety of active community groups and services, all supported through the dedication of volunteers. The town can pride itself in having a St John’s Ambulance service and enthusiastic Badgers group of young first-aiders, the fire service too relies on retained volunteers and then there is the Community Car service and Community Minibus, the Luncheon Club, an award winning Air Ambulance shop, the famous Christmas Tree Committee, … the list goes on ……

Whatever service, sport, activity or information you’re looking for you are sure to find it here.

Events intro

Rhayader is best known to some as gateway to the Elan Valley offering stunning scenery, wonderful walking and some of the best mountain biking routes in the British Isles. The area is also famed for its rare and beautiful wildlife – most notably the magnificent Red Kites most easily seen at Gigrin Farm Red Kite Centre.

Throughout the year there are events and activities on offer – walking, running, biking, fishing, motor cross, horse riding, wildlife and birdwatching, photography, arts and crafts, music, dance and drama, shows, festivals and carnival.
