Discover this forgotten rug making technique with Rosemary Stow, one of the few practitioners of this craft in the UK.

As with all rag rug making techniques, standing wool uses upcycled materials - specifically boiled wool. All tools and materials will be provided but, if you have any wool jumpers or scarves that have shrunk in the wash please bring them along.

At the end of the workshop you will have made a couple of coasters and/ or a trivet which could also form the centre of a rug should you wish to continue with this craft.

The workshop runs from 10am to 4pm with a break at 1pm for a lunch of soup and bread.

People joining walks do so at their own risk. It is suggested that walkers bring a packed lunch and wear footwear and clothing appropriate to the terrain. For all walks, except where stated differently, please meet at the Rhayader Leisure Centre Car Park in Dark Lane at least 5 minutes before the starting time. Dogs must be kept under close control at all times.

Frequently writing about the history of the English midlands and the Welsh borderlands, Francis Brett Young (1884-1954) was particularly interested in the Elan Valley & Birmingham’s Welsh Water scheme - a topic to which he regularly returned in his novels.
The most famous of these, The House Under the Water, first published in 1932 has been dramatised for both BBC radio & television, produced as a talking book and translated into Finnish, German and Spanish. This exhibition offers a unique insight into this fascinating writer’s life and works.

Open daily 10am to 4pm at the Visitor Centre.
